Family Activity: Mindfulness Jars

Mindfulness Jars are a great way to talk about mindfulness with your family. The glitter in the jar represents the thoughts in our mind. As you shake the jar, the glitter swirls around and looks chaotic. However, as you stop shaking it and let it sit, the glitter begins to settle and calm.

That is exactly how mindfulness can affect our thoughts. When we are stressed or anxious, our mind begins to race and our thoughts feel out of control. However, when we practice mindfulness, our thoughts begin to settle and our minds become more clear.

Also, the mindfulness jar is a great tool to use for relaxation and mindfulness. By breathing deeply while watching the glitter settle, you begin to calm your mind and let go of nagging “monkey-mind” thoughts.

Here is how to make a mindfulness jar with your kids:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of distilled water into the jar. (I recommend plastic if you are afraid of the glass breaking…)

  2. Pour 1/2 cup of glitter glue or clear glue into the jar.

  3. Add 1–2 teaspoons of extra glitter to the jar.

  4. Fill up the remainder of the jar with distilled water.

  5. If desired, use a hot glue gun to squeeze a ring of glue around the lid of the jar.

  6. Shake well to distribute the glitter.
