Mantras for The Whole Family
By: Paige Holmes , M.Ed, NCC, LPCA
While in graduate school, I had the opportunity to teach elementary school kids about mindfulness and yoga. One of my favorite classes for them was about mantras. The kids had a lot of fun coming up with them! This is a quick and easy mindfulness activity you can do with your family.
Mantas are phrases, like mottos, that you can repeat silently to yourself as you take deep breaths and work on coming back to the present. It can be something simple, like “I’m okay,” or something more unique to you. As long as it feels right in your heart!
For this activity, depending on your child’s age, you can encourage them to come up with their own mantra(s) or you can give them some examples to think about (or color - see below for the coloring activities!) For older kids (about ages 8 and up), explain the concept to them, and then as a family, brainstorm different mantra ideas. Write them out together with different colors on a large piece of paper that you can hang up in your home. Talk to your child about what their favorite mantras are and why. Lastly, practice as a family by each choosing one mantra and silently saying it to yourselves while taking a few deep mindful breaths.
Mindfully coloring, working on deep breaths while you color and saying the mantra to yourself silently, is a form of meditation. You can do this on your own or with your children of any age. Here are some excellent Mantra Coloring Sheet Activities for all ages:
